Framed SIGNED PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH of Winston Churchill
by Edward Steichen
3 x 5 inches (mounted: 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches)
Churchill at Chartwell
This magnificent wartime gelatin print is SIGNED in ink: "Winston S. Churchill" on the mount, which also bears the penciled inscription "Copy By Harrods." The photograph was taken by the legendary American photographer Edward Steichen in 1932 for Vanity Fair magazine and served as the jacket image for WHILE ENGLAND SLEPT, the American edition of Churchill's ARMS AND THE COVENANT in 1938. Fine authorized copies of this print were produced for sale by Harrods after Churchill ascended to the Prime Ministership in 1940. The print measures 3 x 5 inches and is mounted on a 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 inch card. It is here open-matted in linen and sumptuously framed (11 x 13 1/2 inches overall).
Bibliographic numbers (in parentheses) are from Frederick Woods' original Churchill bibliography (Woods), as emended by Richard Langworth in his Connoisseur's Guide; and from the new, greatly expanded Churchill bibliography by Ronald Cohen (Cohen).
