Guide

LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL

Churchill's impassioned two-volume biography written in defense of his maligned father's posthumous reputation. Subsequently issued in an unabridged one-volume edition. A bulwark of any Churchill collection.

Description: This is a very good example of the London Times Book Club edition, which was issued during the year of publication using First Edition sheets somewhat trimmed down and more plainly bound in cheaper cloth; sold at a low 7 shillings rather than the First Edition's 36-shilling price, causing Churchill to complain to his publisher of "a shabby trick." The cloth here has faded along the spines, as per usual, but is otherwise clean; the binding is square and tight, with a short tear at the spine head and a rub at the lower front corner of Volume I. The contents are fine but lightly foxed throughout, more pronounced at the prelims and fore-edges. There is a vintage bookplate on the front pastedowns of each volume and a former-owner name dated in ink on the front free endpapers.
According to Ronald Cohen in his definitive Churchill bibliography, this set today "is far scarcer" than the First edition.
