Majestic biography of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough; soldier, statesmen, hard-headed Churchillian ancestor. Initially published in England as a lush four-volume set and then as a somewhat less deluxe six-volume set in the U.S. Subsequently issued in a two-volume edition that is not an abridgment, and a single volume edition that is.

Description: One of the jewels of the Churchill canon, this Deluxe Edition of MARLBOROUGH was issued in a limitation of 155 SIGNED leatherbound sets; one of only two pre-publication leatherbound Churchill first editions ever produced (the other being the "Presentation" binding of THE SECOND WORLD WAR).

Handsomely bound in full dark-orange Niger by Leighton Straker, the books are each gilt-stamped with the Marlborough crest on the upper board, gilt-lettered on the spine in six compartments with raised bands, the top edge gilt, the endpapers marbled. This set (number 101 of 155) is in very good condition, with just a hint of darkening to the leather. A former owner's elaborate bookplate is affixed to the pastedowns in each volume. The original card slipcases are not present.

Please Note: This is a weighty item and does not qualify for free shipping.
