Guide

THE SECOND WORLD WAR

The best-selling six-volume history that helped gain Churchill a Nobel Prize for literature. Published first in the U.S., the ensuing English edition contained numerous corrections and even a few additional maps. It is therefore considered more definitive, though today the American edition may be rarer. The set was simultaneously published by the Book-of-the-Month-Club, whose reprints were of a quality comparable to the true first editions and are thus easily confused with them.
Description: This is not a Book-of-the-Month-Club edition (despite the statement: "Book-of-the-Month-Club Selection" printed on the the jacket spine of Volume I) but rather a later printing of the initial American edition, in dust jackets that are priced $6.50, rather than the publication price of $6.00. Volume V ("Closing the Ring") is SIGNED in ink: "Winston S. Churchill" on the title page. The jackets are all fresh and bright with excellent color and just a touch of scattered spine fading; Volumes IV and V are neatly price-clipped. Bindings and contents of all volumes are virtually mint, with bookplates affixed to the front pastedowns of all, save for Volume V. Volumes I and II possess headers and pink topstains, the balance lack headers and topstains. An especially handsome, typically and confoundingly hybrid set, authentically signed.
