Churchill's highly subjective history of the First World War; five volumes (in six books) written over eight years. Initial volumes were first published in the U.S. (by a matter of days), making the American edition the true first edition. Volume I (1911-1914) and Volume II (1915) were published in 1923. Volume III (1916-1918 ) was published in two parts in 1927 (hence the five/in six volumes ultimate format). Volume IV (THE AFTERMATH 1918-1928) was published in 1929; and Volume V (THE UNKNOWN WAR/EASTERN FRONT) in 1931. A one-volume abridgement by the author was soon issued. Most subsequent re-issues have been incomplete, abridged or condensed versions of the original text.

Description: This stunning First American edition set, without dust jackets, has been SIGNED in ink on the half-title of THE AFTERMATH (Book 5): "Inscribed by Winston S. Churchill 1929 For Edward D. Lyman."

Book 5 and Book 1 are Second and Third Printings, respectively, of the First Edition. The remainder are First Printings, with Book 2 the rare second binding variant. All are in immaculate condition, without dust jackets; the fade-prone cloth and gilt lettering uniquely fresh and unfaded, virtually mint, save for a whisper of discoloration to the spine heads of Books 3 and 4. The front hinge of Book 1 is tender and just beginning to give. There is very faint, scattered foxing to the prelims of Book 2. There is a discreet former-owner name in ink on the front free endpaper of Book 4. The bookplate of the recipient, Edward D. Lyman, is affixed to the pastedown of the signature volume and there is toning to the front free endpaper. Else fine.

Winston Churchill's historic 1929 tour of the U.S. in the company of his brother Jack, his nephew Johnny and his son Randolph, coincided with the publication of THE AFTERMATH here. Churchill signed this copy in Hollywood during his extended stay in September. EDWARD LYMAN was a distinguished entertainment industry attorney.
